Limitations and alternatives
Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility of Reading Eggs, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations, and potential solutions. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below.
Known limitations for Reading Eggs:
- Videos: Videos do not have captions because some videos are aimed at a young audience who is unable to read yet. We are currently investigating adding captions to our videos.
- Student Lessons: Interactive activities can not be completed with a keyboard or screen reader because the technology used to display the activities is not accessible by default. Investigating a way to update the activities to work with keyboard and screen readers. If possible complete the activity with a touch device or mouse. Troublesome activities can be skipped by a parent or teacher.
- Instructions: Some lessons have audio instructions or instructions that are only shown for a brief time then cannot be accessed because of limitations of the technology at the time. Newer lessons are being fitted with an additional toolbar to show the instructions the whole time and allowing the student to replay the audio at will. Encourage your child to read or listen to the instructions in full before starting the activity.
- Written text and icons: Text may be hard to read and there is no ability to zoom because of the limitations of the technology at the time. We are working on improving our colour combinations to be easier to read. Moving to a larger device may help with this issue in the mean time.
